In today’s post I’ll be highlighting some of my favorite foods from my Belize trip. They’re not all specific to Belize, but they are all VERY good. I do include some major non-paleo food, but it’s only food I have when I’m on vacation and not something I recreate when I’m home in Texas.
Salbutes
Salbutes take the cake as my favorite food in Belize. I am so obsessed with them. A salbute is a puffed deep fried corn tortilla that is topped with chopped cabbage, a protein and normally a tomato.
For breakfast, I’d get my salbutes with eggs. For dinner, I’d have salbutes with shrimp. They’re so simple and just so yummy. My favorite part is probably the cabbage on top. It’s kind of close to coleslaw or sauerkraut. Mmm, my mouth is watering just thinking about them.
Coconut Rice
I mentioned this is my last post. My favorite thing about rice at restaurants in Belize, is they cook it in full fat coconut milk. In the States, most of us make rice with water, which is fine, but holy moly. The taste of coconut rice is so rich and delicious. I loved having coconut rice with curry. The flavors blended so well together.
Fry Jacks
When my mom and I visited Belize in May, everyone kept telling us, we HAD to try fry
jacks. It’s sad, but neither one of us could ever remember the name of “that food we have to try.” One morning at breakfast, we finally saw them on the menu. We ordered a side of fry jacks and honestly had no idea what to expect.
Fry jacks are deep fried dough, served as a breakfast item, normally with honey or syrup of some kind. They’re not healthy at all, but man, are they delicious. We enjoyed our fry jacks with cinnamon syrup. Absolutely delicious. I now understand why everyone told us why we had to try them.
This past trip, the boys had fry jacks for almost every breakfast, either as a side or as their main dish. They’re that good.
Dirty Bananas
Oh man, where do I start? Well, first off, dirty bananas
are the most unhealthy alcoholic drink you can order. BUT, they might be the best drink you’ll ever have.
A dirty banana consists of a banana, rum, kahlua, bailey’s and ice. Blend it all together. Pour chocolate sauce all over a cup & add the drink. Steven kept calling it an adult milkshake…and honestly, it is. I can’t imagine the amount of sugar in one drink…but I tried not to think about that while drinking these a few times a day.
Conch
Conch is pretty much a sea-snail. Seriously, it’s like a giant snail that lives on the bottom of the sea. I’m sure you’ve seen a conch shell before and you might not have never realized that their was an animal in their. Conch is very common in Belize because it’s pretty easy to find. We had conch mixed in with ceviche, tacos and some curry.
Belikin Beer
Belikin beer is the official beer of Belize. Honestly, I can’t tell you if they offer any other kind of beer in Belize, because Belikin is all we drank and all we wanted to drink.
Belikin beer is, according to their website, full-bodied beer with a medium golden colour is delightful any time of the day. No only is it refreshing, but it’s also $1.50. You read that right. Each bottle is 3 BZE or $1.50. Can’t really pass on a cheap beer when it doesn’t taste cheap.
Ceviche
Ceviche is a seafood dish normally served cold with tomatoes, purple onion, salt and oregano. It’s sometimes served raw or boiled and consist of fish, conch, shrimp and other seafood. Ceviche comes with a side of chips or plantain chips to use as scoops for the ceviche.
