How Whole Foods got us talking about bees

I’ll be the first to admit I love social media. Facebook came out when I was just entering high school and I didn’t have an Instagram until college. Now, I work full-time in social media and love learning new things about the different platforms.

Brands are constantly trying new things. They want to encourage us to buy things or talk about things, but I’ll say, I’m impressed with Whole Foods’ latest social media marketing gimmick.

First, they archived all their posts and were only following Beyonce and Sting….bee sting. I see what you did their Whole Foods. Next, it was Cardi B. At this point, I’m along for the ride. It’s National Pollinator Week, so I had a feeling this was all bee related, but the execution was amazing.

Whole Foods tried their best to throw us off  Jerry Seinfeld and Mariah Carey, but he did the voice in the bee movie and Mariah has a song called Honey. They finally revealed the meaning behind it all Wednesday morning.

They announced the Give Bees a Chance campaign and started sharing fruits and veggies we wouldn’t have without bees! Brilliant! We all know bees are important to our world, but this really shared HOW important they are and it got people (especially me!) talking! I’m constantly impressed with brands and their creativity. I know, Taylor Swift did it first, by wiping her Instagram clean, but the old Taylor’s dead, so what was she suppose to do?

The Give Bees a Chance campaign encourages kids to learn more about pollinators and beehives. The campaign is raising money for honey bee hive grants. Obviously, bees are a huge contributor to the fruits and veggies we love and this campaign shares that with children. According to Sustain Web, one-third of the food we consume each day relies on pollination. Without bees, we would lose all the plants that bees pollinate and all the food the plants create.

Check it out for yourself on Whole Foods Instagram or learn more at the Whole Kids Foundation.

What did you think of Whole Foods marketing tactics? Smooth and creative? Or annoying? Would love to know what y’all thought!
